Expectations
The advocates are a non-therapeutic resource, they typically provide short-term support that is focused on supporting and connecting the student with resources. At the first meeting, advocates will explain their role and limitations, and allow you to tell as much or as little about your story as you’d like. You do not have to share specific information with the advocates, and you will not be pressured to make any decisions. The advocates inform students of their reporting options, available resources, and support them in any decision(s) they make.
The advocates are confidential, meaning they are not required to report what students tell them unless there is a threat to their own life or the life of someone else.
How We Help
Advocates specifically support students who have experienced sexual assault, domestic or intimate partner violence, stalking, or harassment. Students do not have to be working with Title IX or Police in order to meet with an advocate.
For other crimes, please refer to VCU Police Department for assistance.
